Pedodontics

It is a branch of dentistry that aims to treat and protect children's oral and dental health.

Why do children's teeth rot?

The thickness of the enamel and dentin layers of primary teeth in children is half the thickness of permanent teeth. Milk teeth are more prone to decay because they contain more organic matter than permanent teeth. Children may not pay as much attention to oral care as adults. At this point, the task of giving children the culture of oral and dental health falls to the parents. Cleaning the back teeth is especially difficult for a small child. Children can inform their parents by expressing the formation of bruses when they feel very severe pain, and it is usually too late. Young children are fed with breast milk and formula. Parents with a traditional culture can add sugar or honey to milk or formula and give it to their babies. They can also dip their pacifiers or bottles in sugar and honey, which paves the way for early tooth decay.

Is it possible to prevent cavities?

Currently, there is no method to definitively prevent caries. However, the first of the applications aimed at reducing the formation of caries and protecting the tooth surface from caries is strengthening the tooth with fluoride application. During the formation period of the tooth, fluorine is included in the structure of the enamel and the enamel becomes more resistant to acids. Fluoride application in children is possible in two ways.

Professional Fluorine Application:

Professional fluoride application is carried out by the dentist by applying fluorine-containing substances to the teeth.

One's Own Fluorine Application:

People can apply fluoride themselves with toothpastes and mouthwashes containing fluorine. Fluorine can also be applied systemically, ie internally. Systemic use of fluorine can be achieved by adding fluorine tablets or adding fluorine to drinking water. Systemic fluoride administration in children should be done in consultation with the dentist or pediatrician. Another application to reduce the formation of caries in children is fissure sealants. There are indentations called fissures on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Children may not be able to contact the fissures of the teeth effectively enough with brushing. It can prevent the formation of caries by closing the fissures with the application of special substances that we call fissure sealants. Thus, even if bacteria produce acid, Fissure Sealant application will not allow it reach the tooth.

What is the importance of milk teeth?

Milk teeth shape a person's future oral and dental health. Many parents think that their milk teeth will change and make the mistake of not caring too much. Children have 20 teeth, 10 of which are in the lower jaw and 10 in the upper jaw. The importance of preventive dentistry is to emerge at this point. Do not neglect regular check-ups for your children's oral and dental health.
